Community Christmas Trees: Education

This week, David Phillips, our Individual Giving Manager, discusses how your support for the Community Christmas Trees fundraising campaign can help enrich children's education across Hampshire.

If you have ever visited one of our museums or galleries you will have discovered some of the amazing stories and objects that are on display. At Hampshire Cultural Trust we are passionate about sharing these experiences with over 20,000 school children each year.

School can be hard for children at the best of times and during the pandemic children have faced the biggest challenge to education in decades. We know that exciting hands-on learning can transform a child's education and we are committed to ensuring we are able to offer the very best educational experiences to supplement what children learn in the classroom. Thanks to our generous supporters we provide a range of experiences from school trips to museums, where children can explore behind the scenes and meet inspiring experts, to loan boxes filled with fascinating artefacts and sent into classrooms, and targeted outreach programmes for older children. Each activity is designed to inspire young minds and encourage continued engagement with learning.

Our facilitator-led, topic-based sessions for schools are designed to enrich and enhance children’s learning and thinking skills across the curriculum by using real artefacts and specimens. Whether these are held in one of our venues, via Zoom or teacher-led with a loan box back at school, these sessions are often the highlight of the school term. I have recently met several residents in Gosport, who took part in one of these sessions 15 years ago and are still raving about it!

We have installed Community Christmas trees in some of our venues as a simple way to bring the community together and raise awareness of the amazing projects taking place across Hampshire.

If you would like to make a difference in your community and help to provide access for all school children across Hampshire to be inspired by our great people, places and objects you can donate here. We will email you a bauble to print off and hang on your tree at home, or, when we re-open, you can visit us to make a donation and hang a bauble on our community Christmas tree in venue.
