As Valentine's Day is celebrated across the globe, we're showcasing our phenomenal, multi-purpose venue, Basing House. Not only is Basing House well-known for its vast history, awesome ruins and museum to boot, it is also widely regarded as a beautiful, rustic wedding venue in the north of Hampshire.
Set in heart of the picturesque village of Old Basing next to the River Loddon are the remains of Basing House – the perfect setting for a beautiful and peaceful wedding celebration. The romantic ruins, charming Jacobean Knot Garden, the Tudor Great Barn and nearby river walk offer the perfect backdrop to create the most stunning memorable wedding and plenty of opportunities for gorgeous photographs.
A rare gem, it is hard to find a venue that rivals our romantic and unique venue, surrounded by stories of stately grandeur, royal romance, heroic deeds and infamous battles.
What's more, as a heritage charity, all money made from weddings at Basing House goes back into the care and conservation of the site through Hampshire Cultural Trust. So by choosing us for your special day, you're also helping to support our charity, too.
We have a small selection of spectacular wedding settings, The Tudor Great Barn and Meadow or the Garden Museum and Knot Garden, both licensed for marriage and civil partnership ceremonies.
The Great Barn
Capacity of 250 seated and 310 standing
The Tudor Great Barn is built from over a million bricks and tiles and boasts a magnificent oak framed roof and proudly shows its civil war battle scars. The barn is an enchanting space offering plenty of original features yet offers a wonderful canvas for you to stamp your own unique style.
Comfortably seating up to 250 for ceremony and dining and up to 310 for dancing and celebrating the Great Barn is flexible enough to allow smaller wedding parties not to feel overwhelmed by space.
The Cart Shed
Capacity of 120 seated
Just outside in the meadow is the cart shed the perfect setting for those wanting a more outdoorsy wedding ceremony for up to 120 guests. It is licensed for wedding ceremonies, both under the canopy and on the meadow directly adjacent.
The meadow itself makes for the perfect drinks reception after your ceremony, or on arrival for your reception only. This space can also be used by your chosen caterers if you’d like a more outdoorsy feel!
The Walled Knot Garden
Open capacity
Across the road from the Great Barn are the romantic ruins of Basing House, and as no stately home would have been complete without its formal gardens a place for relaxation and entertainment, we have the charming walled gardens. Having lavishly entertained monarchs and nobility throughout history, there really is no better place for a wedding reception than the Jacobean Knot Garden.
Large marquees can easily fit within the space for feasting, dancing and celebrating. Intimate wedding ceremonies can take place in the raised Garden Museum for up to 30 guests inside the Old Lodge with views over the Knot Garden and surrounding ruined walls.
Cow Byre
The Cow Byre is usually used by the registrars before your ceremony for pre-meetings. From then, the Cow Byre is available for you to use as you wish for the rest of the day – some couples allocate this area as a quiet space for anyone needing some time away from the celebrations, for which the byre is well suited.
Community Room
The Community Room has the ideal facilities for your catering team, to be best used as their base of operations, or otherwise used as a store area if they choose to set up outside.
